Here is a collection of Jim Harrison's paintings of and ruminations on the ubiquitous and much-loved state tree of South Carolina, the palmetto. Signifying survival against opposition with its qualities of strong roots and flexibility in the face of sea wind, the tree's historical background and continuing influence is explored in a long-form essay and many smaller essays discussing the use of the tree in the state seal and other official capacities.
