Abstract
:
In many biological and biotechnological contexts, electrically charged polymer molecules--such as polynucleotides and proteins and their complexes--move from one region of space to another in crowded environments. The key to understanding such phenomena lies in polyelectrolyte physics, says Muthukumar (physics, U. of Massachusetts-Amherst). He summarizes the key concepts of polyelectrolyte structures and solutions, ionic flow, mobility in charged macromolecules, polymer capture by pores, and the threading of macromolecules through pores. When they are available, he provides references for derivations rather than working them out in the text, and skirts heavy mathematics to focus on basic concepts that can point researchers in the right direction.
