Abstract : Ohls (pediatrics, U. of New Mexico) and Maheshwari (pediatrics and pharmacology, U. of Illinois at Chicago) assemble a group of pediatricians, neonatologists, gynecologists, and other specialists from the US, Europe, and Australia who present 29 chapters that update physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents, and students on the developmental physiology of the immune response in the fetus and neonate, cellular or cytokine replacement therapies for treatment of hematological deficiencies or infectious disease, and controversies in immune modulation that may play a role in preventing allergic disorders in the developing infant. They overview how the neonate must utilize cells of the hematological and immune systems to fight microbial challenges and ways clinicians can diagnose and intervene to augment their defenses. They provide information about how distortions in the immune response can result in allergy or autoimmunity, and in this edition, add new chapters on infectious diseases. Thrombocytopenia, anemia, congenital infection, coagulation disorders, food allergy, breast milk, probiotics, fungal infections, and chorioamnionitis are some of the topics addressed.
