This report examines current problems with the animal waste lagoons used for treatment and storage in farming operations, and suggests strategies for addressing water quality, odor, nuisance, and public health concerns. The six chapters discuss the fate of nitrogen compounds in animal waste lagoons, seepage and transport through anaerobic lagoon liners, the clogging of liners, the use of coal combustion by- products as low permeability liners, water balance methods for evaluating seepage losses, and air quality issues associated with livestock production.
