Chen (scientific computing, U. of Geosciences, China), Lizhe Wang (Earth observation and digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Jingying Chen (Central China Normal U.) present their own findings and that of other researchers since about 2000 on large-scale distributed simulation, which has become more common as the systems being modeled become too complex for a single computer, however powerful. They cover fundamentals, middleware and software architecture, evaluating alternative scenarios, and applications. Among specific topics are a decoupled federate architecture, synchronization in federation community networks, theory and issues in distributed simulation cloning, and the hybrid modeling and simulation of a huge crowd over a hierarchical grid architecture.
