Abstract
:
Roper Sr. (American history, Emory & Henry College) has written a biography of Benjamin Elijah Mays (1894-1984), educator and college president, preacher, writer, and civil rights activist. Mays was considered a mentor of many who would later achieve fame, including Julian Bond, founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Rev. Martin Luther King. Roper's biography of Mays is comprehensive, beginning with his birth and exposure as a young child to the brutal era of Jim Crow and on through his many travels and accomplishments.
