While contested as a concept, globalisation , in Muslim societies and others, is generally understood to refer to the systemic effects produced by economic, cultural, and social integration in the context of worldwide capitalism. Islamic history saw periods of “proto-globalisation” through contacts between trading empires. In most contemporary Muslim societies globalisation has produced uneven and differentiated effects.
