Abstract
:
The program of images of the Seville Cathedral choir does not appear to have an obvious message; however, the ideas presented grew out of the hybrid society of fifteenth-century Spain. Beginning with Mudéjar designs on the dorsal panels, images appropriated from Islamic culture, and therefore hybrid images, appear to be used as symbols for Christian Spain in terms of politics and culture. Grotesque hybrids on a dorsal frieze symbolize false conversos , alluding to the hybrid culture while simultaneously warning the clergy of a Jewish heresy within the Church. Finally, crowned hybrids on a misericord show how political commentary, kept below the seats of the clergy, can be as multifaceted as the carved hybrid figures. In the end, though not necessarily part of one unified program, these particular images from the Seville Cathedral choir function in relation to the specific location of the carvings, as well as to Spain's hybrid history.
