"E. H. Carr's What is History? was published by Macmillan in 1961. To mark its 40th anniversary, the Institute of Historical Research, together with Palgrave (Macmillan's global academic imprint) and Trinity College, Cambridge, mounted a two-day conference reviewing the state of the discipline.
