The original edition was published in 1996, and the second, in 2007. This third edition is edited by Carin Hagberg (U. of Texas Medical School at Houston), who is now carrying the ball for her mentor Jonathan L. Benumof (U. of California San Diego School of Medicine). Anesthesiologists based in numerous locations in the US and elsewhere have contributed. Three new chapters address ultrasonagraphy of the airway; video laryngoscopes; and disaster preparedness, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and airway management. The remaining chapters have been updated, the book is in full color for the first time, and chapter summaries and bulleted clinical pearls have been added. The structure remains in seven sections addressing basic clinical science, the difficult airway, preintubation-ventilation procedures, airway techniques, difficult airway situations, postintubation procedures, and societal considerations.
