Following a May 2006 report on the state of simulation-based engineering science in the US, the National Science Foundation commissioned a second study to assess its state worldwide, expanding to include simulation in basic science as well as in engineering. Committee members conducted bibliographic research, examination of relevant literature, site visits, and personal contacts with leaders around the world. The report covers life sciences and medicine; materials simulation; energy and sustainability; next-generation architectures and algorithms; software development; engineering simulations; verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification; multiscale simulation; big data, visualization, and data-driven simulations; and education and training.
