Abstract : The Picatrix is an Arabic work translated into Castilian under the patronage of Alfonso X. From Castilian a Latin translation followed. The Latin version was an event of extraordinary importance for the diffusion of the Picatrix in Western Europe. The only extant Spanish version of the Picatrix is located in the Vatican Library (Ms. Reginensis Latinus number 1283a). The manuscript is incomplete--its beginning and end are missing as well as several folios in the middle of the work. It has been edited twice: by George Darby (Harvard University Dissertation, 1932), and by Lloyd Kasten and John Nitti (University of Wisconsin, 1978). Darby's study contains also a study of the codex but unfortunately the dissertation remains unpublished. The Kasten and Nitti's transcription comes with a list of concordances and has no further commentary on the codex; it is available only in microfiches. My investigation has four chapters. Chapter I describes the external characteristics of the codex and proves its connection with the Alfonsine Scriptorium. It also deals with the problems of authorship and date of composition of the Ghayat al-haki m, the Arabic text to which our MS. is related. Finally, it collates the Spanish ms. with the Latin Picatrix, in order to determine the relevance of the Spanish fragment. Chapter II studies the contents of the Vatican codex within a historical and social framework and stresses the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary point of view when approaching the manuscript's subject matter. It has three main subdivisions: "Magic", "Astronomy and Astrology", and "Philosophy and Theology". Chapter III offers an accurate transcription of the Vatican manuscript through a comparison between the original, the Darby, and the Kasten/Nitti transcriptions. I propose my own reading of the original manuscript whenever it differs from the other two transcriptions. Chapter IV offers a vocabulary list defining words dated in the thirteenth century and words dated after the thirteenth century.
