Abstract
:
There has been a huge increase in the knowledge and understanding of the immunological processes involved in surgical practice in recent years. There have been major advances in the understanding of gut immune mechanisms and their importance to good health and state of well being, and in metabolic disturbances and the associated dysfunction of host defences induced by severer trauma and sepsis. Anaesthetists and intensive care physicians increasingly recognize the significant derangements of immune function in the critically ill patient and the possible therapeutic approaches to manage such patients, and so immunology has become highly relevant to trainees in the field of patient management

Essential Immunology for Surgeons provides a concise and up-to-date account of immunology in general and its translation into key areas of clinical practice relevant to the surgeon and the critical care physician. Previously published as The Immunological Basis of Surgical Science and Practice, this textbook, although targeted predominantly to the surgical trainee intending to sit the appropriate specialist examination, will also be of value to the more senior clinician, both surgical and non-surgical, as well as undergraduate medical students. Informative and a stimulant to further reading, the book includes key references to more in-depth study at the end of each chapter, as well as teaching scenarios and clinical vignettes to better and comprehension of how immunology translates into clinical practice.
