Abstract
:
Tony Blair has declared 'Education, Education, Education' to be the top priority of his administration and Labour's landslide victory in 1997 opened up an opportunity for the reform of education. But the new government inherited a quasi-market system from the Conservatives, and the direction of reform during the coming years remains open to debate. This book examines a range of issues and policies that will remain on the agenda well into the new millennium. The issue of selection, and questions of gender and racism are discussed in detail. The politics of the National Curriculum and problems surrounding assessment are explored both in relation to schools and the broader issue of lifelong learning. Questions about school effectiveness and the improvement of schools are discussed, as well as ICT policy. The book explores key questions around the future reform of education in contemporary Britain.
