Abstract	:	This dissertation is on the role and the context of coffeehouses in Istanbul, the capital of Ottoman Empire, in the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. It examines the place of coffeehouses in the larger society and their functions in various social networks in everyday practices of ordinary people. This dissertation attempts to show how, in their capacity as the most important site of male public sociability, coffeehouses served as informational, and occupational spheres, as well as spheres of resistance. It argues that by situating coffeehouses as a major tension zone between the state and the populace, one can trace the struggles, negotiations, and dialogues that shaped and transformed state and society relations in the Ottoman capital.
