Abstract	:	This dissertation is the first historical account of the Confederation of Iranian Students/National Union (CISNU). The CISNU was the largest Iranian opposition organization active throughout the two decades preceding the Iranian Revolution of 1978-79. During most of this period, while opposition was forcibly stifled inside Iran, it continued abroad, led by the CISNU and sustained among a growing population of Iranian students. The dissertation will trace the backgrounds, formation and evolution of the CISNU throughout the 1960s-1970s up to its final dissolution and absorbtion into the revolutionary upheaval of 1978-79. The organization's increasingly effective worldwide publicity campaign against repression in Iran, along with its specific contributions to that country's political culture, are discussed in the context of relevant Iranian and international developments. Originally the Confederation represented a broad coalition of forces, from Islamist activists to secular nationalists and leftists. Gradually, the politics of the organization shifted to the left, but ties to the Islamist Opposition were not totally severed. The CISNU's complex involvement and interaction with exile political groups and the student and guerrilla opposition in Iran, and the dynamics of its structural, political and functional transformations, will be examined in chronological order into the 1970s. It will also be shown how Iranian students were influenced by and contributed to the youth and student movements of the 1960s-70s in the US and European countries.
