Abstract : The volume contains the papers presented at the Fourth Irish Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, held at University College, Cork in September 1991. These annual conferences are an important forum for the presentation of current research work in Ireland. The aims of AICS '91 were to allow the exchange of ideas between the different disciplines concerned with the study of cognition, and to enable industry to assess the potential benefits of artificial intelligence. The resulting volume covers both practical and theoretical applications of artificial intelligence. Many of the papers present new perspectives on common problems, as well as techniques for dealing with them. Although the emphasis of the volume is on Irish research, there are also important contributions from researchers in the United Kingdom, Italy and the United States. Among the specific topics covered are: The foundations of artificial intelligence.- Knowledge representation and processing.- Natural language processing.- Vision and deduction.- Epistemics.- Information retrieval. AI and Cognitive Science '91 provides a comprehensive overview of current research into artificial intelligence and cognitive science. It will be invaluable to researchers and prostgraduate students in this important and fast-moving area.
