Abstract : The subject of the book is to provide a basic understanding of the devices used in optoelectronic integrated circuits and optical signal processing such as waveguides, couplers, switches, modulators, laser diodes, and photodetectors. The description starts from well known basic physical principles. The derivations are detailed and can be followed without additional refereneces. Modern quantum device aspects are included in the text. The results on waveguides, directional couplers, laser diodes, or photodiodes are of particular interest to the reader since these are the elements of greatest importance for applications in optical data transmission and photonic information-processing systems. The book contains numerous qantitative examples and, in addition, a large number of end-of-chapter problems. It is written in a self-contained form and provides a comprehensive and detailed picture of all aspects of modern advanced optoelectronics and photonics. The presentation is equally valuable as a textbook for students and as a reference book for scientists and electrical engineers whose interests are in integrated optics, optical communications or optical information processing.
