Abstract : The nine papers in Advances in Nonlinear Dynamics have been contributed by friends and colleagues of the late Professor Patarasp R. (Pat) Sethna. The topics covered range from specific problems - such as the dynamic buckling of shallow curved structures under stochastic loads, fluid particle motions in gravity and capillary waves generated by the Faraday instability, three-dimensional oscillations of suspended cables involving internal resonances, analysis of one-to-one autoparametric resonances in cables, chaos in elastoplastic oscillators, one- and two-parameter bifurcations to divergence and flutter in three-dimensional motions of a fluid conveying tube - to the more general, viz.: externally excited two-degree-of-freedom oscillators, time-periodic nonlinear systems undergoing bifurcations, and the dynamics of resonant capture. The analyses span the whole spectrum of applicable methods for nonlinear dynamics, including perturbation methods, local bifurcational analysis of differential equations and maps, equivariant bifurcation theory, global bifurcation analysis of maps, Melnikov's technique, and the use of the Liapunov-Floquet transformation. Audience: Researchers and advanced graduate students in applied mathematics, physical and mechanical science, and engineering.
