Abstract : Stereotypes, often dating back to the Second World War and beyond, continue to dominate Anglo-German relations. This is all the more worrying since a changing Europe requires realistic assessments of the nations involved and their partners. This collection of essays brings together views from a number of relevant disciplines, such as psychology, history, cultural theory, literature, pedagogy, but also business and management studies, to elucidate the origins, forms and possible strategies of dealing with stereotypes in the relationship between Britain and Germany. The contibutors assess their impacts on the personal sphere and that of communication, the media, business and politics. They demonstrate that, while stereotypes are a persistent force, they are only static to a certain degree. Living and dealing with them in an active and conscious manner could make them enabling rather than disabling in the assertion of identity in a changing world.
