Abstract
:
This thesis investigates the differences between news stories pertaining to Saudi Arabs in western and Saudi Arab print and electronic media and literary texts. Drawing on Kenneth Burke's framework of 'dramatism,' which explains act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose, and on Clifford Geertz's concept of individual self-identity through difference, I analyze moments in selected news media, such as The Guardian and The Saudi Gazette , among others, and literature, such as Abdelrahman Munif's novel Cities of Salt (1987), to reveal the underlying bias informing the views about Saudi Arabs.
