Abstract
:
FUGUE STATE is a collection of poems that revolve around an eighteen month period when I witnessed my Arab father, relapse into drug addiction, fight in the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, and live off and on in a homeless shelter since. During my father's ongoing issues, were the pivotal deaths of some friends and family, harassment by the San Francisco ATF division for an arson crime I proved I didn't commit, my own drug addictions, and finally leaving Stockton and its urban environment. In keeping with the idea of dissociative amnesia that occurs during a Fugue State, these events are portrayed in the form of narrative poems that are easy to visualize, and mostly stories that either lead up to or follow the time period in question. Simple stories of violence, drug use, flawed family dynamics, culture, and racism that have impacted my life, more so in a negative light.
