Abstract : This paper examines the question: can a city be built in a period of 30 years? Dubai is used as a case study. To explain the aspects that led Dubai to such rapid development, it is important to look at the history of its urban development, which will be discussed in the paper. Studies show that to develop a city within 30 years, economic, social and political factors should all be taken under consideration. The main topics that will be discussed in the paper are: infrastructure, transportation, housing, investments and commerce. The Dubai case included all elements mentioned above to lead to rapid urban development. Nonetheless, sustainability is a major issue that must be taken into account by the city officials and developers.
