Abstract : This dissertation examines the historical and religious context, life, works, qur'ānic hermeneutics, and cosmological teachings of Ibn Barrajān (d. 536/1141), an understudied Andalusī mystic who spent most of his life in Seville and its environs. He was the most prolific, influential, and prominent mystic of the formative period in al-Andalus, as attested to by both his contemporaries and biographers. By highlighting his unique and influential contributions to the Islamic scholarly tradition, this study will hopefully serve as a step toward recharting Andalusī intellectual history by connecting the earliest expressions of mystical thought of Ibn Masarra (d. 319/931) with later writings of Ibn al-'Arabī (d. 638/1240).
