Abstract : From Ancient Islamic Samarkand to Andalusia to American Medicine describes how the study of medicine evolved, from prescientific systems of medicine based largely on magic and prayer to the conventional medicine practiced by twenty first century physicians. Specifically, my thesis outlines the history of medicine as it traveled along the Silk Road from the hands of the ancient Greek and Roman scholars to Central Asia, onward to the southern region of Spain known as Andalusia and throughout Europe, ultimately reaching the Americas. A strong emphasis is placed on the profound Islamic influence on medicine by Spanish, Arab, Muslim polymaths. The history of the Jews, Christians and Muslims on Spanish land is examined and the original contributions to medicine made by prominent Spanish, Muslim physicians.
