Abstract	:	It is estimated that the number of Iranians in the United States has reached 1.5 to 2 million since mass departures following the 1979 revolution, making it the largest population of Iranians in one place outside of Iran itself, with the majority having settled in California. The dispersion of this diverse and culturally rich diaspora has been a chaotic experience defined by revolution, war and immigration, and its struggle for reconciliation of two distinct cultures over the past three decades. The complexity of Iranian American identity has been shaped in different stages of immigration experience and influenced by the political and cultural context in which Iranians have lived. The political events and circumstances beginning with the Revolution, followed by the Hostage Crisis, the Iran-Iraq War, the Persian Gulf war, 9/11, and the more recent vilification of Iran as a potential nuclear threat has contributed to this complexity sometimes banding it as a unified community and other times dispersing it in shame and humiliation.
