Abstract : The primary objective of this study is to employ spatial analysis to examine if corner stores concentrate on nearby schools where they would be highly accessible to students. The study was conducted within a number of communities located on the south side of Chicago, IL. There are many researchers who try to identify spatial patterns of fast-food restaurants and grocery stores. There are also a limited number of studies which analyze the relationship between the arrangements of fast food restaurants in relation to schools. However, to the best of my knowledge, there is no research which studies the spatial pattern of corner stores in relation to schools in Chicago. Purchases from corner stores among urban youngsters before and after school may contribute significantly to snacking and the overall energy intake. That is why this study is valuable in a sense that if the corner stores around schools would sell more nutritive products, they would be able to increase the overall health of the community. However, we primarily need to see if there is any correlation between the location of corner stores and schools within the study area. To seek responses for this question, this study utilized three various methods to find the answer, including two which focus on visualization (buffer and density) and another which is a spatial mathematical method. The results show that there is not much correlation between the locations of the corner stores in relation to the schools in this study area. In other words, corner stores are not concentrated within a short walking distance from schools.
