Abstract
:
The focus of this study was to determine the reasons behind the continual failure of a Western company’s competency based training program operating in the Saudi Arabian division of a worldwide Western corporation. The company did not fully comprehend the cultural issues that impacted the success of its Western orientated training program. The issues that were examined include Saudi Arab culture and the Islamic work ethic; organizational culture; cultural, religious and status barriers; lack of teaching-training qualifications of the Work supervisor-trainers (WSTs), and the trainees’ perceived lack of worth of undergoing training. The methodology employed was a multiple qualitative case study involving semi-structured interviews with 30 of the training program’s participants.
