Abstract : This dissertation seeks to illuminate the complex relationship between religion and ethnicity. More specifically, it focuses on the role of supranational religious identities in ethnic conflicts, and asks: under what conditions—when, why and how—does religion become the main carrier for ethnic identities in religiously homogenous ethno-nationalist conflicts?
