Abstract	:	This dissertation is about the Asian values debate. The uniqueness and distinctness of Asian values has been a topic of serious and popular commentary in recent years. Some of the advocates of a distinct set of values called “Asian” argue for their uniqueness with the aim of distinguishing a growing, reborn, vital civilization from Western civilization, which they pronounce as being decadent and in decay, a civilization that is now experiencing its last days. Others make Asian values a shield against demands by Western governments with respect to market, environmental and labor standards, the price the West exacts for increasing trade with Asian countries.
