Abstract

|
This single case study of masculinity is grounded in the Western psychological tradition of Carl G. Jung (1875-1961); the Sufi mystical tradition of Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273), which is innate to Islam; the West African shamanic tradition of Malidoma P. Somé; and America’s Islamic slave tradition. This research includes the Tree of Life (Green Lady) as its guiding motif and excerpts from my unpublished memoir as primary material. The primary data of heuristic inquiry are the researcher’s own experiences. This research encompasses a single question and concentrates on a single experience: masculinity. Its time frame and setting are 1944 to 1963 in the Mississippi Delta towns of Mound Bayou, Shelby, and Cascilla. The chosen research method is heuristic inquiry. This particular mode of inquiry has specific characteristics, critical concepts, and phases that provide an attitude appropriate for the research and its passionate quest for truth. In this heuristic inquiry, opposite is assumed within opposite; thus in this study masculinity is considered as opposite to femininity. It is a patently personal quest to grasp, understand, and illuminate the traits, meanings, and essence of the subject while assuming its possible significance to psychology and the larger human community. This mode of research into the meanings of masculinity changed the way the researcher experienced a childhood trauma as well as his personal feelings and perspective. It was a healing, transformative odyssey. Heuristic inquiry, which seems to be an effective way of restoring/healing one’s inner self from traumatic experiences, may be applicable to a stagnant or business setback as well.
