Abstract

This excerpt from the novel No Coast Riptide explores trauma, memory, addiction, and the narratives and families that people construct for themselves in an attempt to deal with them. After escaping from a drug rehabilitation center in Minnesota his family sent him to upon discovering his nascent addiction to painkillers, a teenager named Mike hitches a ride to the Mall of America and begins working at Camp Snoopy with a naval veteran named Frank, whose car they both live in. After witnessing a horrific accident in which a young child dies at the amusement park for which he might bear some responsibility, Mike struggles to come to terms with this horror as Frank attempts to coax him off the path that he himself followed after the accidental downing of Iran Air Flight 655 by the USS Vincennes in 1989, in which he played an instrumental role.
