Abstract
:
In this dissertation I focus on narrative performances of Alevi-Bektashi storytellers in order to explore the relationship between commemoration and healing, with particular emphasis on the ways these people construct their sense of self, or subjectivity, and how they overcome traumatic experiences through the production of commemorative discourse. I look in detail at the life experiences of Alevi-Bektashi individuals to assess how they process experience to manage suffering and promote healing. I pay particular attention to the social memory of the Alevi-Bektashi, a heterodox sect of Islam within Sunni-dominated Turkey, taking note of how this memory is produced and transmitted through narrative processes employing commemorative discourse.
