Abstract : Water is being used inefficiently since it is used to be seen as low cost resource due to abundance, to process industries specially petroleum refineries. However as the regulation standard became stringent and scarcities in freshwater supply and the cost of waste-water treatment increases and the cost for feed water makeup increases, petroleum industry has become more concern of water cost. Since large amount of energy is used to process and move water through the refinery, water saving will lead to additional energy savings. Past few decades minimizing fresh water use and recycling effluent water has been researched relentlessly. However, using large volume of industry data and using different mathematical optimization software or graphical method increases remarkably the complexity of this problem. This paper aims to find an appropriate simple way to minimize fresh water intake and cycling the water in the industry again and again. Furthermore, in this paper local refineries estimated water usage data are used and an improved water network is developed through water reuse, recycle and regeneration based on the water quality requirement of each process units in a refinery. The outcomes are discussed, analyzed which gives a better understanding of the problem. No paper before describe the petroleum refining process and how the water is used in refinery. In this paper the refining process and how and where water is used in refinery is illustrated. Moreover, this approach can be useful not only for refineries but also for any process industry. The work displays practical ways of achieving water conservation through technical, cultural, behavioral modification. Water reuse, recycle, regeneration was shown to be a simple yet effective process of reducing fresh water use (32.6 % of less water use) and production of waste-water, which can be chooses for regular development, that will ultimately leads to ideal practice of zero liquid discharge.
