Abstract
:
Based on a comprehensive analysis of scholarly and quasi-scholarly works published between 1894 and 1950, this study investigates Hebrew scholarship on Islam produced in late Ottoman through mandatory Palestine and during the early years of the state of Israel. Hebrew writings on Islam contain the influences of crucial political, social, and intellectual events that left their mark on world Jewry in general and Jews in Palestine/Israel. This study reveals how the processes of the creation of Hebrew national culture, Jewish settlement in Palestine, Jewish encounters with Arabs are reflected in writings on Islamicate civilization.
