Abstract
:
Gulf Pidgin Arabic (GPA) is a newly-emerging pidgin in Arab-Gulf countries, spoken among foreign workers (FWs) with diverse linguistic backgrounds (e.g., Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Pashto, Malayalam, etc.) and between FWs and native Saudi Arabic speakers (Ss). The target offered by Ss is a reduced version of their spoken variety (foreigner talk), which includes reduction of input and regularization of some structural patterns. Under the “feature pool” model (Mufwene, 2001) and “mutual linguistic accommodation” theory (Thomason & Kaufman, 1988), this dissertation examines verb and pronoun forms selection in GPA through the lenses of frequency, detectability, markedness, substratal influence, accommodation, and foreigner talk.
