Abstract
:
This dissertation is a comparative theological study of the role of remembrance in the Islamic observance of the Hajj and the Christian practice of the Lord’s Supper. Comparative theology is a discipline that seeks to assess similarities and differences between diverging religious traditions while continuing to adhere to a particular confessional position. The goal is actively to reflect on one’s own tradition in light of careful attention to and dialogue with another. This dissertation seeks to honor the rubrics of comparative theology while taking seriously how it can be fully an enterprise of Christian theology informed by an evangelical confessional base. It honors comparative theology’s commitment to look for deep learning through a dialogue that explores the importance of distinctives and differences as well as commonalities.
