Abstract
:
Nigerian society is characterized with different acts which constitute social maladies and ethical imbalances. These have been responsible for the wanton destruction of various strata and segments of the society both as a nation and as an individual or group of individuals. One of the factors that must have responsible for this ugly situation is not unconnected with the existing parallel and un-bridged gap between the Muslims who constitute the overwhelming majority of the population and the Islamic teachings and values which are not only rooted in the Qur’an but also structured by it. One of the ways through which a lasting solution can be proffered to this scenario is undoubtedly the use of Quranic methods as it would be anchored by scholars who have attempted to demonstrate how the Qur’an can be used to that effect. One of such prominent scholars is Sayyid Qutb whose work on Tafsīr is described as Magnus opus. The aim of this work therefore is to relate the renditions of Sayyid Qutb on ethical themes as contained in Surat u ’l-Isrā’ with the Nigerian situation. The work adopted historical and exegetical methods. The former enabled the work to access and assess historical facts that are related to keys issues in the work while the latter also availed the work the opportunity to assess the exegetical submissions of Sayyid Qutb and other relevant and useful works. The finding of this work revealed that Nigerians are living in parallel to the ethical laws of not only Islam but also any other one that has human values. Also, absence of unified legal system with Islamic connotation and insincerity on the part of government are some of the factors that are responsible for ethical imbalances in the society today. The work recommended that the Nigerian legal system should be unified in order to avoid confusion and mix-ups that used to arise from diverse legal rules that are available in the country today. The work also recommended a synergy for intellectual gathering among the scholars and training of scholars on the basis of 21 st century themes. The work therefore concluded that the submissions of Sayyid Qutb in his Tafsīr are suitable to address the societal ethical maladies in Nigeria.
