Abstract
:
An overview of previous etymological studies of the Hungarian verb óv 'to defend, protect; to take care of sy/sg; to guard sy/sg', the article makes recommendations on its Turkic origin. As it is likely the ultimate source of óv, the Ancient Turkic verb *āb(iˉ)- 'to console, to pamper' and its derivatives are also discussed in detail, as are possible contaminants using data that may stem from the Ancient Turkic verb *apiˉ- 'to hide, cover, protect'. The article, furthermore, leaves open the possibility that the Mongolian verb abura- is etymologically related to the Ancient Turkic verb *āb(iˉ)-. Certain verb forms are also examined (the Ancient Turkic *amX- 'to be calm, peaceful', the Tuvan ovār- 'to pay attention' etc.), which, despite similarities in sound and meaning, have no bearing on the Turkic etymology of the Hungarian verb óv.
