Abstract	:	It has been suggested that research into the history of agriculture throws light on details of the prehistory of Indo-European speaking peoples. This issue has been the subject of heavy debates among archaeologists; however, it has only sparsely been dealt with by students of the history of Indo-European languages. The Sanskrit godhūma appears to be one of the most promising terms that can be traced down from Anatolia to India. The present paper lays special emphasis on the way the word got into India, and offers a plausible solution to the problem of its absence in the Ṛgveda. Subjecting its cognates to closer examination allows us to identify cultural and language borrowings in a much broader temporal and spatial framework than it has been assumed.
