Abstract : The observation of nature and attempts to classify it are features of civilisation. The extensive knowledge of domestic livestock possessed by herdsmen on the steppes of Inner Asia helped to form and define various aspects of traditional Mongolian life. Classification charts on the uses of domestic animals, on the five main animals — horses, cattle, camels, sheep and goats — by age, sex, or other breeding characteristics are presented as a foundation. This is then used as a basis for further discussion, also with charts, to examine how this classification system was applied to religion, law, and the social milieu of traditional Mongolia.
