Abstract	:	Few thinkers familiar with D.Z. Phillips' philosophy of religion would deny that his approach is problematic. What is not often acknowledged however is that it has also been widely misrepresented. The aim of this thesis is to clarify his views where they have been most misunderstood, to identify areas of weakness, and to emphasise the strength of his approach within the philosophy of religion. Much of the thesis concerns the controversies surrounding his adoption of certain terms and phrases from Wittgenstein's philosophical method, and his application'of these within his philosophy of religion.
