The article addresses the migration phenomenon occurred towards the big cities in Turkey, starting from the 1940s and continuing up to the present day, thus trying to explain the subsequent housing problems arisen from this, from both a social and cultural point of view. It includes a brief analysis on the urbanisation process in the light of Turkey’s historical, economic and political changes, particularly on the gecekondu classes affected by this process and, in general, on the structure of the Turkish society. The author, on the basis of his own observations and scientific researches, sheds a different light on the phenomenon of internal migration in Turkey.
