Wabanaki communities across northeastern North America had been looking to the sea for generations before strangers from the east began arriving there in the sixteenth century. From earliest encounters to the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, scattered bands of Native hunter-gatherers came together to command fleets of sailing ships and engage in strategic diplomacy, thwarting English and French imperialism.
