ʿUbaydallāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥuṣayn al-ʿAnbarī (d. 168/784–5) was a Basran jurist and qāḍī (judge), born between 100/718–9 and 106/724–5. A high-ranking notable from the tribe of Tamīm, he was a scholar in various disciplines, including law, poetry, lexicography, and tribal genealogies. In 156/773, the caliph al-Manṣūr (r. 136–58/754–75) appointed him both qāḍī and governor in charge of prayer (but not of the army or tax collection) in Basra. The succeeding caliph, al-Mahdī (r.
