Abstract : The aim of this research is to study the meaning given to 'professionalism' by the police themselves by way of an analysis of the police as an occupation and career patterns within it. This will cover recruitment and selection, basic and higher training and promotion. Specifically this includes an examination of: (a) the extent to which the respective processes of formal and informal education contribute to the norms and values prevalent in the police force; (b) how these norms and values are made effective (through selection, training, promotion, rewards and punishments etc) at different levels of the police force; (c) the extent to which the norms and values in the police force are shared both within and between strata; (d) the relationship of the norms and values in the police to law enforcement. The above is informed by an analysis of the history of the ideas of policing as they exist within the police force and how these are transmitted within the police, which it has been assumed could not be ignored in studying career development within the police organisation.
