Abstract : "This book examines various mechanisms used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in response to challenges raised against its claim to legitimacy. As the CCP continues to move away from traditional Maoism, it seeks to maintain its commanding role in Chinese political life despite a growing number of challenges, from political and non-political actors alike, to its claim that it is the most effective force to keep the country together. The contributions to this book describe some of these challenges and explain how the CCP selectively adapts to them in order to maintain its authority and relevance in China. Arguing that despite the severity of the challenges it faces, the CCP - and the Chinese state apparatus it commands - has not opted for retrenchment, but rather has found ways to adapt to contemporary political conundrums and dilemmas using a wide range of methods, the objective of this book is to describe how the CCP tries to succeed in these endeavours. Other studies of legitimacy in China have been produced in recent years, but this book proposes to look at it from a different angle: instead of looking at the forces in society that challenge the regime, it looks at the ways in which the regime adapts to them." "The Chinese Party-State in the 21st Century will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese politics, Asian politics, comparative politics and political sociology."--BOOK JACKET.
