Abstract

"Comparative Plant Virology, Second Edition is a revised edition of Fundamentals of Plant Virology written by R. Matthews. Since the previous edition was published, the way virology is taught has changed and this revised edition takes this into account by not only dealing with plant viruses, but also placing them in context in relation to viruses of members of other kingdoms, animals, fungi, and bacteria. Topics covered include history of viruses, evolution of viruses, structure of viruses and viral genomes, functioning of plant viruses and interactions with their hosts, movement of plant viruses within and between plants, epidemiology and control of plant viruses, and uses of plant viruses. An elementary knowledge of molecular biology is assumed, especially of the basic structures of DNAs, RNAs and proteins, of the genetic code, and of the processes involved in protein synthesis. However, the student need not have a basic understanding of plant structure and function as these are described in the text."--Jacket.
