Seventeen international academics contribute 16 chapters to the second edition of a textbook on the use of language to promote, maintain, or threaten harmonious social relations. The text includes basic concepts and theories relevant to the study of culture, communication, and politeness; a selection of empirical studies illustrating the kinds of differences in language use/interpretation that can occur between different cultural groups; theoretical discussion of the range of factors that influence people's actual performance and reactions in intercultural interactions; a selection of empirical studies on intercultural interaction; and methodological issues in the design and analysis of research in culture and communication.
