"Gilles Deleuze's Expressionism in Philosophy (1968) is an important work because its conclusions provide the philosophical foundation for Deleuze's later metaphysical speculations on difference, singularity and the relationship of power and the body. It is the key with which to understand Deleuze's alternatives to Hegel's dialectical method and to unlock later works more explicitly concerned with politics and ethics. Deleuze and Spinoza is the first book to examine Deleuze's philosophical commentary on Spinoza and assess his arguments concerning substance, the philosophy of mind, epistemology, and moral and political philosophy. The author respects but disagrees with Deleuze the philosopher, and suggests that his arguments lead first to a Hobbesian state of nature and a disembodied account of the rational subject and then to the elimination of the principle of the subject altogether.
